The pins used for acupuncture are significantly smaller than a hypodermic needle. About 40 acupuncture pins can fit into the head of one 18 gauge hypodermic needle. While medical hypodermic needles have a sharp edge designed to cut or puncture skin, an acupuncture pin works by parting the skin. Sensation is minimal during insertion of acupuncture pins, with some points giving a slight pinching sensation, while others give no pain sensation at all.
